A bit about us

Returning for its third year, the Cliveden Literary Festival will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September.

The 2019 Cliveden Literary Festival programme includes: BBC Newsnight presenter and author Emily Maitlis; author, screenwriter and social commentator Bret Easton Ellis; former Man Booker Prize winners Ian McEwan, Ben Okri and Howard Jacobson; novelists Leila Slimani, Elif Shafak, Robert Harris, Candice Carty-Williams, Helen Fielding, Kate Mosse and Kathy Lette; physicist and writer Brian Cox; philosopher, writer and founder of The School of Life Alain de Botton; broadcaster and author Chris Evans; former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency General David Petraeus; writers and historians Hallie Rubenhold, Lucy Worsley and Tina Brown; and politicians Luciana Berger and Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Panel topics and sessions for this year’s festival include global power, conflict & conspiracy, the art of the novel, Victoria’s legacy, the secrets of the universe and the secrets of the mind.

The Cliveden Literary Festival takes place at Cliveden House, which sits above the Thames in Buckinghamshire, surrounded by 376 acres of National Trust grounds. In the course of its 350 year history, Cliveden has frequently been a setting for political machinations, romantic intrigues, and intellectual debates. The list of luminaries to have stayed there includes poets and film stars, conservatives and communists, satirists and Prime Ministers. Cliveden has hosted every monarch since Charles II, and recently the house’s longstanding connection with the royal family was the subject of international interest when the Duchess of Sussex chose to stay there on the eve of her wedding.

The festival is presented in partnership with The National Trust and Iconic Luxury Hotels and is sponsored by Citi Private Bank and Blain Southern. It is held in association with Tatler and other sponsors and partners include The Arts Club, Silversea Cruises, Champagne Veuve Clicquot, David Clulow, John Sandoe Books and Lexus.
