Stoke Mandeville trails

These trails have been created so that you can not only visit Stoke Mandeville, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement, but also explore Buckinghamshire.

There are three types of trail, each with a Bronze, Silver and Gold version depending on how far you would like to travel. On each trail you will find specially selected attractions to visit, from the unusual to the well-known, so get out there for a fantastic day out!

Heritage Trail

BRONZE (22 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Claydon House. (14.4 miles)

From Claydon House, spend the afternoon in Buckingham at the Old Gaol with the Larkrise to Candleford display, the Buckingham Chantry Chapel and the many cafes and shops. (7.4 miles)

SILVER (28 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Lacey Green Windmill. (9.7 miles)

Drive from Lacey Green to Hughenden Manor, the former home of Benjamin Disraeli. (5.2 miles)

Have a spot of lunch at Hughenden Manor.

Spend the afternoon at the Chiltern Open Air Museum for a bit of time travelling. (12.8 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to the Hell-Fire Caves in West Wycombe. (13.9 miles)

From West Wycombe drive to Kingston Blount to stop for a fabulous lunch. (7.5 miles)

Head onto Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway for a steam ride and afternoon tea. (1.7 miles)

Stop off at the Long Crendon Courthouse for a brief visit. (7.3 miles)  

GOLD (27 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Waddesdon Manor. (7 miles)

Have a quick look at the array of steam trains at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre. (1.8 miles)

From the Railway Centre stop off at the Old Thatched Inn at Adstock for lunch. (10.9 miles)

Have an afternoon tea at Stowe Landscape Gardens. (6.8 miles)

Family Trail

BRONZE (19 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital.  (7.7 miles)

Have a picnic with fantastic views at Whiteleaf Cross (6.7 miles)

Head to the Maize Maze at Lacey Green and navigate your way out! (3.8 miles)

If you have time, pop into the Horse Trust to see beautiful retired horses just down the road in Speen. (0.6 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden (8.1 miles)

Head up to Wendover Woods for a barbeque and try a trail if you have time (8.2 miles)

Spend a few hours at the Bucks County Museum to discover Buckinghamshire’s past (7 miles)

SILVER (25 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Aerial Extreme at Willen Lake in Milton Keynes  (23.8 miles)

There is something to do for all the family at the Xscape complex, including shopping, skiing and indoor skydiving (1.4 miles) 

GOLD (31 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Bekonscot Model Village and Railway in Beaconsfield (19.6 miles)

Spend the rest of the day at the Black Park Country Park for high-rise fun at Go Ape! (11.4 miles)

Rural Trail

BRONZE (18 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to briefly visit the Brill Windmill (14.8 miles)

Lunch at the Chandos Arms in Oakley (1.7 miles)

Have a look around the Boarstall Duck Decoy and Nature Reserve (1.6 miles) and don’t miss the historic Boarstall Tower whilst your there.

SILVER  (23 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to Grebe Canal Cruises for a morning cruise down the Grand Union Canal and a cream tea. (9.8 miles)

Pop into the Ford End Watermill or visit the Ivinghoe Beacon (1.6 miles) before heading to Stockgrove Country Park. (11.4 miles)

GOLD (24 miles)

Start from Stoke Mandeville Stadium to the Chiltern Brewery and pick up some of the locally made ales. (3.7 miles)

Absorb yourself in the secret Lyde Gardens and stop off at the Red Lion in Bledlow for lunch. (6 miles)

Drive onto the Old Thatch Gardens to see the stunning former home of Enid Blyton. (13.8 miles)
