The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre has won The British Guild of Travel Writers' (BGTW) prestigious award for the Best UK Tourism Project.
At a gala dinner held on Sunday night at the Savoy Hotel, London, the Museum was selected from three finalists nominated by BGTW members for the best UK tourism project. The nominated projects had to be less than two years old and have tourism potential in addition to benefiting their local community and environment.
BGTW Chairman Mary Anne Evans said:
"Each year our members nominate an incredibly wide-ranging and fascinating list of projects for the BGTW Tourism Awards and this year is no exception. We were particularly impressed with the way the Roald Dahl museum shows children from all backgrounds that reading, writing and story telling can be tremendous fun."
Felicity Dahl, Roald Dahl's widow and Chairman of the Museum said:
"I am absolutely delighted that the Museum has won this prestigious award. It is a marvellous achievement and a testament to the hard work so many people have put in since we opened last June. I am sure it will give the Museum an enormous boost. How wonderful that this has happened during the year in which we have celebrated what would have been Roald's 90th birthday. "
Amelia Foster, the Museum's Director said:
"We are really thrilled to have won this highly respected award. It's wonderful to have our work of caring for Roald Dahl's archive, telling his story and inspiring children to read, write and think creatively recognised in this way. It also puts us firmly on the map as a venue of national and international standing. "
