There must be something in the Buckinghamshire air to inspire poets, Thomas Gray wrote his masterpiece Elegy Written in A Country Churchyard in Stoke Poges, Rupert Brooke took inspiration in the Chilterns and John Milton the author of Paradise Lost lived in Chalfont St Giles. His former home Miltons Cottage is now a fascinating museum dedicated to his life and works. Allow 1½ hour.
The attractive Thames side town of Marlow has more than its fair share of literary connections, Mary Shelley, completed Frankensein whilst living in the town with her husband the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Fellow poet TS Eliot was also a resident as was the author Jerome K Jerome whose most famous work Three Men in a Boat celebrates the charms of the delightful Compleat Angler Hotel.

Roald Dahl is one of Buckinghamshire's most famous sons and is celebrated in not one but two museums and an annual festival in his honour.
