Hidden Treasures

There are many marvels and wonders across the county to captivate, enchant and delight.

Literary lovers should visit the home of one of England’s greatest poets, John Milton, who lived in Chalfont St Giles. Milton Cottage is now a museum celebrating his work and times, as well as being a Grade II Registered Historic Garden. The Cowper & Newton Museum in Olney now occupies the house where 18th Century poet William Cowper lived and worked and discover how Reverend John Newton’s career went from slave trader to preacher and how he came to write Amazing Grace.

Strewn across the rolling hills you will find the historic windmills of Brill, Lacey Green, Pitstone and Quainton. The latter, built in 1830-32, is the tallest windmill in Buckinghamshire and now that it has been restored to its former glory, can once again grind wheat into flour. You will never stop learning when you visit the watermill at Ford End Farm at Ivinghoe, the only surviving watermill with original machinery in Buckinghamshire.

Explore Buckinghamshire’s other unique attractions including Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, which depicts rural England in the 1930s in miniature or the Hell-Fire Caves where you will discover its underground secrets.

If sophistication is what you’re looking for, spend an afternoon at one of Buckinghamshire’s majestic mansions or nearby Woburn Abbey, the birthplace of afternoon tea.

A tour of the Chiltern Brewery, the oldest independent brewery in Buckinghamshire, offers a fascinating insight into the brewing process of their award-winning range of fine English ales. A visit to the Farmers’ Bar at the historic National Trust owned King’s Head in Aylesbury provides the perfect opportunity to sample some of the Brewery’s finest.

Other little gems include the Court Theatre set in the beautiful grounds of Pendley Manor in Tring, which puts on a wide range of entertainment suitable for all ages and all tastes, whilst the Natural History Museum in Tring displays the fascinating and wonderful Victorian animal collection of Lionel Walter Rothschild.
